My sister’s birthday is near St. Patrick’s Day, so I always include these Oreo Truffles on the brunch menu I host for family. She loves Oreos as much as I do!

This simple recipe came from my mom years ago; she originally got it from a neighbor. It’s one of those easy, reliable desserts that always disappears fast.

How To Make Oreo Truffles

These truffles are straightforward and fast. You only need Oreo cookies, cream cheese, and chocolate candy melts (see variations below for substitutions).

  1. Pulse the cookies in a food processor until they are fine crumbs, then add the cream cheese and blend until evenly combined.
  2. Scoop and roll the mixture into balls, then freeze for about 30 minutes to firm up.
  3. Dip the chilled balls in melted chocolate and let the coating set.

Recipe Tips

Although this recipe is very simple, a few tips will help you get consistent, neat truffles.

  • Use 6 ounces of cream cheese for a balanced texture—not too crumbly and not too soft. If you prefer a softer filling, you can use the full 8 ounces, but the mixture will be looser. Test the texture by pressing a small amount together; if it holds, it’s ready. If it crumbles, add a bit more cream cheese.
  • A cookie or melon baller produces uniform truffles. Aim for roughly 1-inch balls, or adjust to your preferred size. After forming, freeze the balls—this step prevents them from falling apart when dipped.
  • Only remove a few balls from the freezer at a time when dipping, since the uncoated centers warm and soften quickly.
  • You can make the filling balls a day ahead and dip them the next day for convenient prep.

Recipe Variations

  • Any Oreo works. Regular, double-stuffed, golden, or flavored Oreos will all make delicious truffles—choose your favorite.
  • Candy melts vs. chocolate chips. Candy melts or coating wafers are easy to use and set nicely. Chocolate morsels can work but sometimes require tempering and can soften at room temperature.
  • Color and garnish. Dip in dark, milk, or white coating and decorate with a contrasting drizzle, sprinkles, or crushed cookie crumbs for a festive look.
  • No food processor? Place cookies in a sealed plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin, then combine the crumbs with softened cream cheese by hand until evenly mixed.

How To Store Oreo Truffles

Keep truffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. For longer storage, freeze them for up to two months—thaw in the refrigerator before serving.
