I spent more than two decades of my life without children. There are countless photos of me traveling, socializing, and enjoying time alone — no kids in sight. Thanks to what I like to call “Momnesia,” that chapter of my life sometimes feels like it belongs to someone else.
Momnesia isn’t a bad thing. It’s similar to amnesia in that it makes you forget the days when you only had one person to care for: yourself. Motherhood transforms everything. Though every mother’s journey is unique, we share many common experiences — both joyful and challenging — that create a bond between us.
I love when moms find humor in everyday parenting moments. One of my favorite memes is the “You Know You’re a Mom When” list. Below are some of my favorites — situations I’ve related to at different points in my parenting journey. Can you relate? How would you finish the sentence “You know you’re a mom when”? Share yours in the comments.
- You can’t remember the last time you went to the bathroom without an audience.
- You attempt to shut and lock the bathroom door for a few minutes of privacy, only to find it doesn’t last.
- You realize you just watched an entire episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse by yourself.
- A trip to the grocery store without kids feels like a mini vacation.
- You haven’t slept through the night in years.
- Waking up at 7 a.m. qualifies as “sleeping in.”
- By the end of the day, you discover you’ve been wearing dried baby spit-up on your shoulder.
- You fantasize about going to bed as if it’s the ultimate luxury.
- Your “purse” has become a diaper bag full of supplies instead of a fashionable accessory.
- You’ve fed a baby while sitting on the toilet — because sometimes practicality wins.
There’s a short film called “The Mother ‘Hood” that made me both laugh and cry. It highlights the stereotypes and judgments that often arise between parents with different philosophies. The twist is that despite those differences, something happens that reminds us we all share one essential priority: love and care for our children. I won’t spoil it — take a look and see for yourself:
