Slow-Cooker Swiss Steak Recipe: Tender, Savory Comfort Meal

I remember growing up eating Swiss steak. The best part was the rich tomato-and-beef sauce it created; I would pour it over homemade mashed potatoes. Peppers and onions could be added and they would become tender and flavorful. Simple, comforting, and delicious.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs round steak or cube steak
  • 1 1/2 cans beef broth
  • 2 cans diced tomatoes 14 oz each
  • 1 green pepper sliced
  • 1 onion sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • salt & pepper
  • flour for dredging

Instructions

  • In the crock pot, combine the diced tomatoes, sliced peppers, sliced onion, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
  • Pat the steaks dry, then lightly dredge both sides in flour seasoned with salt and pepper. Heat a little olive oil in a frying pan and sear the steaks 2–3 minutes per side until browned.
  • Nestle the seared steaks into the crock pot so they sit in the tomato mixture.
  • Cook on high for 5–6 hours or on low for 8–9 hours, until the meat is tender and the flavors have melded.
  • Serve the Swiss steak with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread, spooning the tomato-beef sauce over the top. Enjoy.
