Food, Wine & Magic: Explore Checkered Past Winery Experiences

UPDATE as of 9/20/2020 – Checkered Past Winery closed its physical location in The Cedars neighborhood of Dallas. However, they now distribute their wine to various bars, restaurants and retail locations around the area. Additionally, you can buy online and have their wines shipped to your door.

There’s something special about sharing good food and wine with friends—add laughter and amazement, and the evening becomes unforgettable. That’s exactly the combination you’ll find at the “Wine and Magic” show that featured Checkered Past Winery in Dallas. I recently returned for another visit and was eager to sample new wines and menu items while catching the performance by Trigg Watson. Below is a refreshed review of what we tasted, what we loved, and why this is a memorable night out.

But First, The Wines!

This visit I focused on Checkered Past Winery’s Texas red lineup and ordered a flight to sample four selections: Dolcetto, RedRed Wine, Sangiovese and Tempranillo. The flight was a great way to compare styles side by side and find personal favorites.

On my previous visit I had sampled a bit of the Sangiovese and was hooked; this time confirmed my impression. The Sangiovese stood out for its balance and character, and I ended up purchasing two bottles to take home. If you’re a member of their wine club, take advantage of the perks: 10% off bottles you enjoy on-site and 20% off bottles you take home.

My companion and I both prefer reds but have different taste preferences. Of the four wines we tried, the Sangiovese was our unanimous favorite. My next picks were Tempranillo and Dolcetto, while my guest enjoyed the RedRed Wine as a close second.

Salad, Charcuterie, Flatbread, Pizza and More

On this visit we tried a variety of menu items, including a few new plates and a couple of repeats because they’re too good to skip—like the Goat Cheese Stuffed Pappadew Skewers, which remain a standout. The bright, tangy peppers paired with creamy goat cheese are irresistible.

We also shared the Baby Arugula Salad. It’s generously portioned for two and features baby arugula, tomatoes, apples, blue cheese and candied pecans, finished with a cranberry vinaigrette. I’d order it again, though I’d ask for the blue cheese on the side due to a milk sensitivity—otherwise it’s fresh, flavorful and pairs nicely with the reds.

The Charcuterie Board arrived next and offered a tempting mix: prosciutto di parma, duck salami, hot capiola, pork salami, pickles, walnuts, seasoned toasted focaccia and an olive tapenade. Every element complemented the wines, and the duck salami was nearly fought over—fortunately we shared.

To round out the meal we ordered a vegetable-topped pizza loaded with fresh produce and a herbed goat cheese spread served with warm flatbread wedges. Both dishes were comforting and wine-friendly, offering a nice contrast to the cured meats and salad.

Trigg Watson’s show is both clever and hilarious. His mix of close-up illusions and stage presence keeps the audience engaged, and the comedic timing makes the evening as much fun as it is mysterious.

I tried to puzzle out his methods this time, but he still left me baffled. That sense of wonder is part of the appeal—unexpected moments and impossible tricks delivered with charm.

One practical note: the staff is exceptionally attentive. During the show they quietly refill drinks and clear plates so the performance goes uninterrupted, and they’re quick to bring additional wine and dessert when requested—almost like magic itself.
