Modern Minimalist Bedroom Makeover with Havenly Design Ideas

After my wonderful experience designing the living room with Havenly, I knew I would turn to them again to create the bedroom of my dreams.

For the first year in my apartment the bedroom was almost empty — no bed frame, no dresser, no art. I focused on the kitchen and living room first, since I spend most of my time there as a food blogger and YouTuber. Once those rooms felt complete, I turned my attention to creating a modern, minimalist, plush bedroom sanctuary.

I was thrilled when Asia, the same Havenly designer who helped with my living room, was available to design the bedroom. The process mirrored the living room project, from selecting major pieces to choosing finishes and accessories. Below is a tour of the completed space and notes on every detail.

My Modern and Minimalist Bedroom Design Tour

All of the Bedroom Design Details

We began by choosing the large furniture: the bed frame, dresser, and nightstands. Asia recommended the Oliver bed from Interior Define. The upholstered frame offered a sleek, modern silhouette with a warm, inviting feel, so I chose a warm beige fabric and upgraded to a California king for extra comfort.

A new large bed required a new mattress. After researching organic options, I picked a high-quality pillowtop that delivers exceptional comfort. To complete the hotel-like, crisp bedding look, I used soft white organic sheets, a down-filled duvet with a white cover, and a mix of white and stone-colored pillowcases for both function and a clean aesthetic. I kept decorative pillows minimal for an elegant, uncluttered finish.

The dresser was trickier because of the window spacing. I needed a piece that fit the wall and matched the modern vibe. We selected a warm wood dresser with full-extension drawers for practical storage. To modernize its look, I added hand-painted brass-and-white knobs that provide subtle sparkle and improved functionality.

On the dresser I kept styling simple and intentional: glass shadow boxes for jewelry, a low geometric planter for an orchid, and a piece of blown glass art I brought back from Murano. The result felt curated without clutter.

To balance the darker wood dresser and keep the room bright and neutral, Asia suggested white-and-brass nightstands with clean lines. They brought lightness to the space and complemented the bed and dresser for a cohesive look.

Drapes played a key role in the bedroom’s mood. Based on reference images I’d shared, Asia recommended grey Belgian flax linen blackout drapes. The blackout fabric not only blocks light but also softens outside noise, noticeably improving sleep quality. For a plush, hotel-like appearance, I chose two panels on each side of the wide windows — four panels total.

To bring in the SoCal vibe and plenty of greenery, we added plants and planters throughout. A standing planter near the window revived a ZZ plant that had been struggling on the patio — moving it into the bedroom gave it the right light and it flourished. Greenery was woven into the design for a fresh, relaxed feeling.

On the side of the dresser I originally considered a lounge chair, but space constraints due to the double drape panels led us to choose a slimmer mid-century dining chair instead. Its higher seat makes it easier to put on shoes. A wool accent pillow adds texture and comfort, while hanging geometric planters above the chair bring height and visual interest.

For lighting I chose edgy table lamps with concrete bases, triangular shapes, and brass accents — they’re sculptural and modern. On one nightstand I keep a sunrise alarm clock that simulates a gentle morning light. On the other nightstand is a small statue and a faux aloe plant for a touch of green where natural light is limited.

A floating wood floor mirror sits near the room’s entrance. It reflects light, visually expands the space, complements the dresser, and serves as a practical piece for dressing and styling each morning.

Artwork sets the tone for the room. We created a gallery wall above the dresser combining a small piece I already owned with several curated prints that echo sand, sea, and organic shapes — tying together the SoCal, modern, and minimalist aesthetics. Above the bed we installed a large, joyful yet calming beach print that greets me each morning and instantly lifts my mood.

The finished room feels balanced, bright, and restful: warm wood tones paired with white finishes, layered textiles for comfort, carefully chosen lighting, and greenery for life. It’s a modern, minimalist sanctuary designed for restorative sleep and everyday ease.
