This Cointreau Margarita Recipe is outstanding — a simple homemade margarita made with just four ingredients and naturally sweetened with maple syrup.

This margarita with Cointreau has become my go-to margarita for the past year and a half.
We first mixed it up during quarantine and have been serving it to friends and family ever since — everyone consistently asks for another.
It’s essentially a classic margarita: fresh lime juice and silver (blanco) tequila, brightened by Cointreau — a premium orange liqueur — and gently sweetened with pure maple syrup. The maple adds a rich, complex sweetness that tastes amazing. In my opinion, it’s the best margarita recipe.

Why this recipe works
- Simple, quality ingredients — good tequila, fresh lime, real Cointreau, and pure maple syrup — deliver a cleaner, better-tasting margarita.
- A healthier option than many bar mixes: when you make it at home you control the sweetener and avoid artificial additives.
- Versatile — easily adjust sweetness, add fruit, or spice it up with jalapeño.
- Balanced and refreshing — the combination of citrus, orange liqueur, and maple syrup makes a perfect margarita.
Recipe ingredients

- Silver tequila (tequila blanco)
- Clear, with a clean, soft profile that works well in margaritas. Use a good-quality tequila you enjoy — Don Julio is a favorite for many.
- Cointreau
- A premium orange liqueur (a type of triple sec) that adds bright, clean orange flavor.
- Fresh lime juice — freshly squeezed is best for a bright, lively margarita.
- Pure maple syrup — use 100% maple syrup (not blends with corn syrup) for natural sweetness and depth.
See the recipe card below for exact measurements.
Additions/Substitutions
(1) Rim the glass with salt or sugar before adding ice and the margarita for a classic touch.
(2) Substitute maple syrup with a quick honey syrup — dissolve equal parts honey and boiling water (for one serving, melt 1 tbsp honey in 1 tbsp boiling water).
(3) Swap Cointreau for another orange liqueur like Grand Marnier, or use a splash of orange juice in a pinch.
(4) Make it spicy by adding sliced jalapeño to the shaker or muddling a few slices for a subtle heat.
(5) Add fresh fruit — crushed watermelon or berries work beautifully; gently muddle to release juices.

How to make a margarita with Cointreau
Step 1: Juice fresh limes.
Step 2: Combine lime juice, silver tequila, Cointreau, and maple syrup in a cocktail shaker with a few ice cubes. Shake vigorously until well chilled.
Step 3: Fill your serving glass with ice, strain the margarita mixture over the ice, and garnish with a lime wedge. Serve immediately.
That’s it — quick, bright, and delicious.

Yes. Cointreau provides a cleaner, more refined orange flavor compared with many other triple secs.
Try Grand Marnier, another orange liqueur, or use a small amount of orange juice if needed.

Other cocktails (or mocktails) you may enjoy:
Try a Fresh Paloma for a grapefruit-forward tequila drink, or a Virgin Margarita mocktail if you prefer a non-alcoholic option. Dairy-free White Russians and healthy strawberry daiquiris are also great alternatives depending on the mood.
